We have assessed the effect of a single episode of hemodialysis on protein carbonyl content and protein sulfydryl (SH) groups in 28 patients and 14 control subjects.
In chronic renal failure (CRF) patients the carbonyl content increased when compaired to the controls (p<0.001). But there were no statistically significant changes found between pre-hemodialysis and post-hemodialysis. The protein SH groups decreased significantly in CRF patients (p<0.001). After hemodialysis the protein SH groups increased significantly (p<0.001).
Base on these findings, it can be concluded that hemodialysis does not lead to any loss in protein carbonyl content but increases the protein SH groups.
