Objective: The primary aim of this study was to investigate the difference, if any, in the frequency of temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) between patients with ESRD and healthy individuals. Our secondary aim was to compare the frequency of TMD between patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) treated with hemodialysis (HD) vs. peritoneal dialysis (PD).
Methods: All participants completed a questionnaire and underwent dental evaluation to confirm TMD.
Results: The frequencies of TMD were 13% and 8.9% in the patient and control groups (p=0.35), respectively, and 13.4% and 12% in the HD and PD groups, respectively (p=0.85).
Conclusion: We observed no difference in TMD frequency between patients with ESRD who received HD and PD as renal replacement therapy and between patients with ESRD and healthy individuals. Further large-scale studies are warranted to gain a deeper understanding of this topic.
